I am doing a quick story this morning as I am short on battery.
One night I was totally exhausted. It was flu season and everyone was calling in sick. I was sleeping soundly away when the phone rang. I grabbed it and said "******** County Sheriff's Office" The voice on the other end said "no it isn't but it is where we need you to be".....You get so programmed it just comes out automatically.
Another time the phone rang at home and I said "hello", my supervisor said "get down here right now we just had a tornado hit". We do not get tornado's in our area and so I thought she was joking and said "right and I am the queen of England" She said "I don't care who you are as long as you get here NOW".
We had a small tornado touch down in some sagebrush with no damage to anything except brush and juniper trees but the public sure was in a panic and we could not answer phones fast enough. There was 3 of us and our phone lines stayed lite for several minutes straight before people calmed back down.
They wanted to know what to do....How do I know I am terrified of those dang things myself...ha ha but by golly gee I was calm on the phone. The first instructor I had who knew me and my favorite saying "shit" when things go wrong told me. "Linda, you have to learn never to say "oh shit" to a person on a call or to a patient no matter how scared you are"
