Weather report requests

A simple thing but one I used to laugh at and had to work very hard not to mouth off to them. A person calls and wants to know what the mountain pass is like. We have blizzard conditions on the flat plains and 8” of snow and they wonder what the mountain pass is like. I am sorry but I always wanted to say “you should go, its 80 degrees and sunny up there”.

I actually had one lady call from the small hill in town and want to know what it was like downtown. I wanted so bad to say, boy that two blocks makes such a difference, it is so warm and sunny here. I mean you can see it from your window lady.

Then I remember the blizzard I told you about, but at least the blizzard conditions were higher then where they were at, not at a lower elevation.

The worse weather question I ever had asked was when I was in Alaska and it was December and some guy called and wanted to know if he could get through the roads from Prince Rupert on South in March. I said “there are no road closures they have listed at this time sir”  He said “no, I mean is the weather going to be bad”. I really thought it was a crank call but the man was serious. I said you have to be kidding, I have no way of knowing what the weather is going to be like months from now. He advised me he had to know as he worked at the mill and they do vacations by seniority and he had to get his vacation put in early enough that no one else could get the time he wanted and he did not want to take vacation and then not be able to get out.  He kept just arguing with me that I should be able to get a hold of the weather bureau or something and get the information for him. I finally said after arguing for almost ½ hour. Sir we are not God, he is the only one that can tell you. He got mad and hung up on me.

People never want to believe me when I tell that story but it is the truth.
