Sitting in dispatch one Thanksgiving morning pouting because I had to work while everyone was at home having Thanksgiving. At least one of the best things about Thanksgiving dinner is the left overs. Thanksgivings are usually as slow as molasses on a cold morning until that night when people start getting liquored up and the domestics start. During the day shift you are lucky if the phone rings.
The 911 line rings!
"911 please state your emergency"
caller: "I need some help, I can't find out how hot to cook my turkey or for how long"
911: "I am sorry mam but this is the 911 line"
caller: "I know."
911: "you should never call 911 unless it is an emergency."
caller:" you don't understand mam this is an emergency. My new in-laws are coming for Thanksgiving and my mother-in-law is an excellent cook. I can't have her show up for my first dinner at my house and have the turkey still raw. Please, you have to help me."
911: since it is so slow I proceeded to tell her to call my business line and I would tell her how to cook her turkey and answered what questions I could. This was back before the internet which would have been so much easier. She called me off and on all that morning. She made my Thanksgiving one to remember even though I had to work.
