We had a subject with mental problems that was running around town every night with a gun strapped to his head and nothing else on. He was a nice guy usually but when he flipped out he was out of it and thought everyone was out to kill him. Anyway they had a report he was down at the rodeo grounds in one of the corrals so off everyone went to try and surround him. They parked down from the grounds and worked their way up to surround the corral and sure enough he was doing a dance in the middle of the corral. The all got through the fence and had him surrounded. They did not want to shoot him so they all had their pepper spray out with one officer with a sniper gun. They slowly started closer and he finally noticed them and started screaming at them to get back. They were close enough they thought they could spray him and the officer let go with the spray. Problem was the spray came out 360 degrees around the cap plus shot forward. The officer not only got himself but all his back up officers. They came into the police dept. to book him in with tears running down their faces and I won't repeat the language. Took them a couple of days to see the humor in that one but as usual their humor serviced and everyone had a good laugh at their own expense.
Most people don't realize it but every department I worked for you had to be sprayed with pepper spray before you could carry it where you would know how it felt and also know how to work through it...It does BURN!
