911, can I talk to Grandma

Calling 911 has been put on TV as if you need help call 911. That did not work because people called for any kind of help. Now they say for life threatening emergencies call 911.

One day the dispatcher received a call and heard.

Caller: “I want to talk to grandma”
911:  “Honey, this is 911 for emergencies”
Caller:  “I know, I want to talk to my grandma”
911:  “can I talk to your mom?”
Caller: “no, I want to talk to grandma”
911:  “What is your name?”
Caller:  “Teresa”
911: “Teresa where is your parents?”
Caller: “in the other room, I want to talk to grandma”
911:  This is 911 your grandma is not here”
Caller:  “yes she is” and starts crying
911:  “don’t cry Teresa but your grandma isn’t here and I will help you if you get your parents on the phone”
Caller: “I want my grandma! I want her to come get me.”
911: “Teresa, are you ok?  Are you hurt?”
Caller:  “No I just want to talk to my grandma”

About his time my supervisor said “what did she say her name was?”
911:  She said it was Teresa
Supervisor: I bet that is Linda’s granddaughter, let me talk to her.
“hi, is this Teresa?”
Caller: “yes, can I talk to grandma?”
Supervisor: “Teresa, this is April and Grandma Linda is not at work today, you will have to call her at home”
Caller:  “I don’t know how”
Supervisor: “have your mom call her for you and let you talk”
Caller:  “ok”

I was so embarrassed but also proud since she was only about 3 that she listened when I said if you need help call 911.  She knew that is where I worked.  I am so glad I had a supervisor that always talked to the kids. All the kids in Madras loved Ms. April and she saved the day.
