calling 911 by accident

Back in the old days before they had a caller id we had a system which if someone called 911 and hung up you could hit a button and it would ring that phone number back. This ring went through even if they were on the phone or the phone was on the ground.

One time I received a 911 hang up. I could hear someone breathing but no one would say anything and then it hung up. I hit the button to ring the phone back and this little shaky voice said “oh my God, oh my god ” I said “Are you ok?”  She said very shaky “I was until this phone rang when I had it in my hand, now I am not sure, my heart is racing and I fell really shaky”. I explained I was the 911 operator and I had received a phone call from this phone.

She asked how in the work that had happened. She said she was trying to call her son overseas and it would not go through and she hung up and was trying again when all of a sudden the phone rang while she was on the phone.

I explained to her that when you dial a lot of numbers you will get 911 and a lot of people get 911 when trying to call overseas as they poke to many numbers. You hear all the time of how animals or small kids call 911 and how smart they are. Any dog or child that starts poking numbers will eventually get 911. Tiny 2 year olds call all the time playing with the phone when mom is in the other room.

She finally calmed down and we had a good laugh.
