One of my favorite all time police interviews. An officer came in for his police interview. They always made it tough for them physiologically as they set up above on the chamber seats which are a half circle at the front of the room and two steps above the regular floor. This was back in the days that everyone smoked. The interview board all had ashtrays and were smoking and drinking coffee. The poor guy being interviewed had to set on the lower level with these guys in a semi circle around him. It is hard enough to face a panel of people for an interview instead of one let alone when it is for a job you have always dreamed of.
The proceeded to ask him questions and finally asked. If you are on patrol and you see your Sergeant come out of bar drunk headed to his car what do you do?
The applicant said “I would offer him a ride home”
Interviewers: “he refuses the ride.”
Applicant: “I would call a supervisor.”
Interviewers: “none are available and your sergeant is getting in the car”
Interviewers: “none are available and your sergeant is getting in the car”
Applicant: “I guess I would have to cold conk him and put him in the patrol car and take him home and hope he thanked me in the morning”
Everyone had a good laugh and later when the training sergeant became a good friend he told us how everyone had enjoyed that and in all the years they had been interviewing people for a police job before and since he is the only one who would knock the sergeant out and take him home anyway. They said many said they would have no choice at that point but to arrest him and advise them to notify the chief. Some even said they would ignore it. Some said they would call for backup and arrest him.
Oh by the way, he got the job and lucky for the training sergeant he did not drink…
