Once on a time long ago kids thought cops were your friend and someone to go in times of trouble. Today they are told "if you don't be good the cops will come get you". Parents use the cops to scare their kids into doing things or acting better. I was shocked the first time I heard someone say that.
One day on my bus the kids started yelling, watch out the cops are behind you. I told them "so". They said "they will come get you and haul you off, cops are mean". I explained to them that cops only haul people off to keep them from hurting others. One little girl said "no they come get my dad and mom all the time and then they take me to the JV center and I have to live there until dad and mom come home and I kick and bite" I asked her if mom and dad were fighting when the cops came. She said "yes, but they hadn't hit me yet". I told her the cops took her mom and dad to keep them from hurting each other really bad and maybe hurting her. They put her in the JV home because they did not want her to have to stay by herself and try to cook and take care of herself. She said "oh, mom said it was because cops are really mean and like to hurt people".
About a month later the little girl came up and said "you would be proud of me the cops came last night to get mom and dad while they were fighting and I told mom and dad that the cops wouldn't come if they would quit fighting. They never come unless you fight" then she said "when the cops took me I did not kick or bite or anything and I said thank you to them". I gave her a big hug and told her how proud I was of her. She told me the cops were really nice to her and now she likes them and she actually had fun at the JV center.
Don't scare your kids of the cops!
